Youth*In*Harmony*Workshop

Attention Students & Parents!

FestivALL Charleston, the Kanawha Kordsmen and Almost Heaven Chorus invite all young singers to sing four-part harmony in an ensemble that will open for International Champion quartets Max Q  and Maxx Factor at the Capitol Theater, Friday, June 26. This event is made possible with the support of Bayer CropScience, Institute, WV.

Designed for those entering grades six through college, this activity requires only that you can carry a tune, are willing to work hard in preparation for the workshop, can attend the entire day's intensive instruction and be available to sing that night.

This Youth In Harmony event is produced and directed by Ted Rose, chorus director and quartet baritone. Rose holds a BFA in Music Composition from Marshall University, with voice (baritone and counter-tenor) as his principal instrument. Additional instructors include Manny Lopez, director of the San Antonio Chordsmen, TX, District Competition gold medalists. Lopez is currently a singing judge candidate with the Barbershop Harmony Society and plays a central role in the Youth In Harmony program throughout Texas.

Thanks to the generosity of the Columbia Gas Transmision, workshop activities will take place in Columbia Gas Auditorium, located at 1700 MacCorkle Ave SE, Charleston, WV.  A schedule for the day will be sent to registrants, but simply put, youth will be under YIH supervision at theColumbia Gas Auditorium from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, and then will be released to a guardian until curtain call on Sunday

Here's How

Step 1 - Register no later than Friday, June 11, by filling out the registration form, having your guardian sign consent, and sending $20 to:  Ted Rose, 4523 Washington Ave., Charleston, WV  25304.

For the Registration Form click here.

Step 2 - Use the learning CD and written music to practice.  First learn the words, rhythm and notes for your part.  Additional tips will be sent with the learning CD and written music.  Before June 25 you should be able to sing your part smoothly, matching the recording and singing "off paper" -- without using the written music.

Step 3 - Stay in touch with the instructor.  It is important to not learn mistakes, so the instructor may want to hear you sing over the phone about a week before the event.

Step 4 - June 25 - Attend the Workshop at Columbia Gas Auditorium.  All successful participants receive a Chjarleston Harmony T shirt, which will be worn for the on-stage performance the next day.

Step 5 - June 26, perform on the Capitol Theater stage, hang out with all the singers during the Afterglow r.

YIH participants are welcome to sit free of charge in the Clay Center first balcony for the remainder of the concert.  If participants prefer to sit on the main floor (orchestra level) with family or friends, a ticket purchase is required.  All tickets are $24, all seating is reserved.

Optional Step 6 - Sing in downtown Charleston for FestivALL on Saturday.  This is an additional opportunity for young and old to sing in small groups during FestivALL's busiest day, Saturday, June 26, as part of the Guerrilla Harmony experience.  See "Guerrilla Harmony" on YouTube or FaceBook for more information.
